Among the many great things Elton John has done in his life, quitting drugs ranks right near the top. One of the greatest singers and song writers of our time, John has been able to step up to the plate both personally and professionally.
John admits to having been addicted to cocaine, which he quit using in the 1990s. Like most addicts he became totally self-absorbed and turned his back on friends and family, many of whom died from AIDS. As reported in teens.drugabuse.gov.
While on cocaine he made risky decisions about sex—and feels lucky that he isn’t infected with HIV today.
Like all addicts he still thinks about his addiction constantly. He admits to dreaming about using cocaine in his sleep a couple of times every week. This even after he has been sober for 20 years.
Why did he start using cocaine? The answer may surprise you. He thought it would help him overcome his shyness and open up to people; in the end, it isolated him from everyone in his life.
Throughout his career, John has battled addictions to alcohol and cocaine. By 1975, the pressures of stardom had begun to take a serious toll on him. During "Elton Week" in Los Angeles that year, John suffered a drug overdose.
He is a recovering drug addict and alcoholic. Hopefully he will continue to stay sober and help others who battle addiction issues.
