The Law

In Alberta, Canada, the legal drinking age is 18 years old. Underage drinking at ages 16 or 17 under parental supervision is allowed in a residence or temporary residence only.

The Penalties

Persons under 18 years old who try to purchase alcohol will have any alcohol confiscated and be issued a fine (“liquor ticket”) of up to $115 under section 87(1) of the Alberta Gaming and Liquor Law. Attempting to purchase alcohol with a fake I.D. could lead to being charged under section 403 of the Criminal Code, Identity Fraud.

Minors between the ages of 12 and 17 who are caught violating this law would mostly fall under the Youth Criminal Justice Act. Penalties could include community service work and probation.

What are the requirements for passing? Can I retake the test?

A score of 80 percent or greater is required to pass the final exam. However, if for any reason you fail the test, you can simply retake it! You're guaranteed to pass!
