Despite the aggressive title to this blog, I really like John Daly. He is one of the more colorful figures in the world of sports. While I wish he were a better role model for children and the rest of us, he nevertheless makes himself human ion a sports world that can dehumanize the best of them.
Daly is a winner of two major golf tournaments and has walked off the course in anger more times than that. He is a man rumored to have lugged around a bottle of whiskey in his golf bag during a tournament and chain smokes and pounds cola every day.
He is an admitted alcoholic and has been in and out of rehab numerous times, including a stay at the prestigious Betty Ford Center in Rancho Mirage, California.
On the course he is known for his mammoth drives. Of the course he is known for his drinking. He admits to having consumed a fifth (750ml) of Jack Daniels whiskey every day during his 23rd year of life.
He has been removed from a flight for acting stupidly while intoxicated. He claims to be sober since 2010.
His golf game certainly has improved in the past year or so and I hope he stays sober. He admits to playing better golf when not drinking, yet continues to battle the demon. Perhaps an 8 hour alcohol awareness class wouldn't be the worst thing for him.
