Drug Class Blog Discusses Possible Cure for Cocaine Addiction

Are you addicted to cocaine? Have you tried to stop many times and never succeeded? There may be something new coming available that may help you finally kick that horrific habit.

Here’s the deal – a fine-tuned combination of two existing pharmaceutical drugs has shown promise as a potential new therapy for people addicted to cocaine—a therapy that would reduce their craving for the drug and blunt their symptoms of withdrawal. As reported in www.sciencedaily.com.

In laboratory experiments which combines low doses of the drug naltrexone with the drug buprenorphine, made laboratory rats less likely to take cocaine compulsively. Human trials are soon to follow.

While the two-drug combination would have to prove safe and effective for people in clinical trials before approval by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the work represents a significant advance in the field because there are currently no FDA-approved medications for treating cocaine addiction.

There is no denying cocaine is a major problem in this country today. It is estimated that 1.9 million Americans had used cocaine within the last month. About a quarter of all drug-related emergency room visits are linked to cocaine use—482,188 in one year alone. It would be nice to discover a cure to cocaine addiction. Thus far there is really no true remedy for to cure any addiction. With more drug classes and public support perhaps we can keep kids from ever trying drugs. That is the best cure for cocaine and other drug addiction issues.
